Less than five minutes by foot lies the heart of the village of Messaria with its restaurants, 'tavernas', supermarkets, shops and coffee shops. Also noteworthy in Messaria is the Argyros Mansion built in 1888 by wine merchant Giorgios Argyros. It represents one of the island's most distinguished neoclassical buildings, and is now a museum open from May to October that offers guided tours, showing the wealth and glamour of one of the island's winemaking clans.

Beyond Messaria, a leisurely 15-minute walk will take you to Fira, the capital of Santorini, where you even have a bigger choice of museums, restaurants, outings and activities, plus spectacular views of the caldera. There are two beaches that are just minutes away by car, and you can even hike to one of them if you want a small adventure. In the meantime, the staff at the St. Alexander can arrange activities such as hiking, diving, and wine tours around the island.
